Condition: Good-antique; wood stock appears to have been refurbished at one point (sanded and restained); small split on left side around the plate screw; barrel has gray/brown patina w/ lioght rust; lockplate & breech have faded case colors to a dull dark brown; bore is mostly bight w/ some light spots of pitting; good rifling; bayonet has scattered pitting
Includes: refurb stock; cleaning rod; sling swivels; socket bayonet
Marked: lockplate is dated "1863" behind the hammer and reads agel mark "U.S. / Springfield"; "U.S." marked on the buittplate tang; barrel & breech have matching SNs; barrel stamped "F.3PI."; top of breech marked "1870" / eagle head / "US"
Note from owner:  U. S. Springfield model rifle 1868, .50/70 caliber. This specimen is marked "3rd infantry." During the late1860's and early 1870's the 3rd was assigned to Ft. Larned and Ft. Dodge, Kansas and Camp Supply, I. T. primarily to protect commerce on the Santa Fe Trail. These regiments also saw much action on the Dakota frontier during the fourth quarter of the 19th century.

Provenance: Property from the personal estate collection of iconic Texas businessman, civic leader and philanthropist Billy Joe Red McCombs (1927-2023) from his home in Olmos Park, Texas; previously on long-term loan to either San Antonio Academy or the Bexar County Courthouse; this lot is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity as property from the McCombs personal estate
