Marked: lockplate reads "SPRING / FIELD / 1848" behind the hammer and eagl / "US" in front; barrel tang is dated "1850"; buttplate tang marked "U.S."; "V / P" / eagle head on left side of the barrel; "W L" initilas scratched into the stock on right side
Note from owner: Springfield model 1842 Dragoon carbine, identifier on gun. Several thousand of these weapons were produced at the Springfield Arsenal to arm U.S. dragoons and mounted rifleman during and after the Mexican War. They were contemporaries of the famous Colt "Walker" revolvers.

Provenance: Property from the personal estate collection of iconic Texas businessman, civic leader and philanthropist Billy Joe Red McCombs (1927-2023) from his home in Olmos Park, Texas; previously on long-term loan to either San Antonio Academy or the Bexar County Courthouse; this lot is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity as property from the McCombs personal estate
