Condition: Good-antique; wood stock has wear & dark patina commensurate w/ age; repaired split at the wrist; barrel & lockplate have plum brown patina w/ some light pitting; bore is dark & pitted w/ good rifling remaining; mechanically functional
Includes: maple half-stock; brass fittings & patch box; wooden ramrod; set trigger
Marked: lockplate reads "J.H. JOHNSTON / PITTSBURG PA"
Note from owner: Half stock Plains rifle. Identifier on gun. A typical brass-mounted, half-stock "Plains" rifle of the second quarter., 19th century. These sturdy maple-stocked pieces were the standard hunting and fighting weapons of the American frontiersmen.

Provenance: Property from the personal estate collection of iconic Texas businessman, civic leader and philanthropist Billy Joe Red McCombs (1927-2023) from his home in Olmos Park, Texas; previously on long-term loan to either San Antonio Academy or the Bexar County Courthouse; this lot is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity as property from the McCombs personal estate
