Note from owner: Half-stock Plains rifle, German silver mounted, large Elk patchbox by Caswell & Herbert, Albany , N. Y. These makers operated in and around Albany, N. Y. during the 1830's. The opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 created a large market for New York state-made rifles, and some of the most famous of early American makers operated in that region.
