After returning to San Antonio, Hunter completed a notable New Deal-era post office mural in Alice, Texas. The mural was later preserved and installed at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American Art. Hunter built a long teaching career at the Witte Memorial Museum School of Art, the San Antonio Art Institute (where he became Dean in 1951), and his own Hunter School of Art.
