Shannon Stirnweis, born in Portland, Oregon, is known for his detailed illustrations and fine art paintings, particularly those depicting the history of the Old West. He studied at the University of Oregon, the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, and trained under Pruett Carter. His early career included service as a U.S. Army illustrator with assignments ranging from the Berlin Wall to Alaska, and later commercial illustration work for Sportsman Magazine, Field and Stream, and various publishers and advertisers. After serving as President of the Society of Illustrators in New York, Stirnweis transitioned to gallery painting, applying his strong illustrative foundation to western historical themes. His work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Smithsonian, the U.S. Department of the Interior, and the Pippin Museum.
