Condition: Very good-antique; wood stock has mostly light-moderate wearsome splitting around the lockplate & on the lft side of the wrist; barrel retains approx. 60% of blue coverage w/ brown patina coming through; lockplate has nice bright bluing remaining w/ some rust on the top; bore retains most of the brightness w/ some frosting from light pitting; strong rifling; emchancially very good
Includes: saddle bar & ring; Buffington rear sight (stamped "C"); cleaning rod in butt compartment
Marked: lockplate reads eagle crest "U.S. SPRINGFIELD"; serial number on receiver behind the breechblock; top of breechblock reads "US / MODEL / 1878"; barrel proofs; faded stock cartouche behind the saddle ring bar; buttplate marked "U.S."; the "1873" model stamp on the breechblock actually resembles reading "1878" due to a die error that stamped too deeply on the "3" to make it appear as an "8" (this is a documented error)
