Gary Robert Swanson was born in South Dakota and raised in Southern California, where he began working closely with wildlife as a taxidermist, museum curator, and conservationist before becoming a full-time artist. Though largely self-taught as a painter, he developed a highly realistic and detailed style based on years of studying animals. His wildlife paintings are known for their lifelike quality and careful attention to anatomy and natural settings. Swanson has received many honors, including Gold Medals, Judges’ Awards, and Best of Show prizes. In 1993, he was named “Legend of Wildlife Art” by a leading wildlife conservation organization.
