Elizabeth Keefer Boatwright (Texas, 1899-1989), "Zuni Indians", watercolor on paper, signed lower left, inscribed on the verso with signature, title, and date, 1937

sight: 6 x 9.5 in., frame: 11.75 x 14.75 in.

Provenance: Property from an Austin, Texas collector

Elizabeth Keefer Boatwright attended the Art Institute in Chicago and the Art Student League in New York City. During her time at the League in NYC she became the assistant of Joseph Pennell, master etcher, from 1925 until his death a year later. Shortly after, she began making aquatints and drypoint etchings of Native Americans in Arizona and New Mexico. She was the first white woman who was granted permission to visit and document Native Americans on reservations in San Ildefonso, Taos and Cochiti pueblos. Her etchings earned her a one-woman show at the National Museum in Washington, D.C. (credits: Museum of the Big Bend)
