Although largely self-taught, he developed his sculpture through close observation of ranch life and animals, aiming for realistic movement and detail. His bronzes often include subtle touches of humor while honestly portraying the challenges and traditions of the Western ranching lifestyle. Zabel has earned numerous awards and a strong following among Western art collectors.
