James "Buckeye" Blake is a painter and sculptor known for his traditional realist depictions of the Old West. Born in Fullerton, California, and raised in a rodeo family that settled in Carson City, Nevada, Blake inherited his artistic talent from his mother, a muralist and portrait artist. He left school early to work in Hollywood creating cartoons and movie backdrops, but soon returned to Nevada to pursue fine art full-time. In 1979, he moved to Montana, where he became known for his large bronzes, including a notable piece depicting the funeral procession of Western artist Charlie Russell, as well as numerous Western-themed paintings and sculptures.
