Americo Makk was a Hungarian-born artist who trained at the Hungarian National Academy in Budapest and won a scholarship to Rome, where he received the Vatican Portrait Award. He and his wife, Eva, were appointed Professors at the Academia de Bellas Artes in São Paulo, Brazil, becoming official artists of the Brazilian government, before relocating to New York City in 1962. Makk specialized in Western-themed paintings, drawing on research from books, museums, and firsthand visits to ranches, Indian reservations, and western towns in California, Texas, and later Hawaii. His work is known for its Impressionist and Renaissance influences, dramatic lighting, and dynamic, nostalgic compositions. He also painted notable portraits, including Presidents Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan.
