A prominent American landscape painter, Alfred R. Mitchell became famous for his impressionistic scenes of California and the American West. Mitchell completed his formal art training at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts while also studying under California artist Maurice Braun. Mitchell made a move to San Diego in 1908, where he would based for the rest of his life. He traveled throughout California and Arizona in particular, depicting the natural landscapes there in an distinctive manner that has attracted serious collector interest in the years since his death.
