William Haskell, "Where the Frost Meets the Firelight", acrylic on panel

26 x 20 in., Framed dimensions: 30 x 24 in.

William Haskell, a leading Santa Fe-based contemporary Southwest artist, creates unforgettable dry-brush watercolor and acrylic works capturing the modern West's dramatic landscapes and light. With strong auction results, his paintings draw collector demand in regional modernism.

William Haskell stands as a visionary in modern Southwest art, masterfully capturing the regions essence through a contemporary lens. His work transcends traditional representations, infusing landscapes and cultural elements with a fresh, dynamic energy.

Born in Madison, Wisconsin, Haskell has lived in New Mexico for over 25 years and knows this is where he was always meant to create works of art. His use of bold color palettes and innovative compositions breathes life into the arid deserts, towering mesas, and historic adobe structures, portraying them with a vibrancy that speaks to their timeless beauty and modern relevance. This unique artistic style lends to Haskell often being regarded as a true pioneer in the evolution of Southwest art.

His work has been featured at many prominent western art museums, including the Briscoe Western Art Museum, the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, The Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, The Tucson Museum of Art, The National Museum of Wildlife Art and The Booth Western Art Museum.

He has also been featured on the covers of Art of the West, Southwest Art and Western Art Collector magazines, as well as appearing in features in numerous art magazines worldwide. His work has also been on the cover of the Sante Fe Wine and Chile Festival publications. Haskell has participated in over 75 group art shows, has been the recipient of the Artist’s Choice Award at the Quest for the West Show, as well as most recently, the David Crockett Artist Choice Award at the San Antonio Briscoe Museum in 2025.

Civic and Community Contributions

For years, Haskell has served as a selfless mentor to up and coming artists in New Mexico, advising on everything from developing one’s own artistic style to marketing. Haskell has donated numerous works to the Cancer Foundation for New Mexico as well as the New Mexico Governor’s Mansion Foundation. Most recently, he donated his time and energy to a children’s mural on the wing of one of Santa Fe’s largest churches.
