Vintage Mexican retablo depicting prayer to El Senor de Chalma (The Lord of Chalma, a renowned, black crucifix statue located in a cave in Chalma, Mexico), with prayer giving thanks for the healthy birth of piglets in the midst of a bad birth epidemic, signed Romualda Cruz Hernandez (Celaya Guanajuato, 20th century), and dated 1937

Provenance: The Estate collection of late teacher and humanitarian Douglas Rhodenbaugh, from his historic downtown Austin, Texas home. Mr. Rhodenbaugh spent decades traveling throughout Latin America assuming his vast collection of folk and fine arts, often buying pieces directly from the artisans he met on his travels.
