Tom Lovell was academically trained at Syracuse University, earning a BFA in 1931, and began his career as a highly accomplished magazine and pulp illustrator before turning to Western history painting in the late 1960s. His mature work is characterized by meticulous historical research,  exploring Native American life, frontier encounters, and early expeditions. After relocating to Santa Fe in 1975, he became closely associated with the Western art movement and was elected to the Cowboy Artists of America. Among his most notable professional honors are election to the Society of Illustrators (including multiple gold medals and later Hall of Fame recognition), two gold medals from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, the Prix de West from the National Academy of Western Art, making him one of the most respected and awarded painters of Western history.
