Sakamoto during military service, and continuing advanced work in Texas with John Chumley and Chapman Kelley before completing three years at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts studying under John McCoy. Recognized by the state of Texas as Artist of the Year (1973-1974), Thomason is known for meticulously observed Western and Texas regional subjects. Working frequently in dry-brush watercolor and tempera, he depicts windmills, cultivated fields, working cattle, historic homes, and Victorian architecture with precision and restraint. His work has been exhibited at venues including the Texas Watercolor Society and the National Academy of Design, where he received the Olmsted (Olbrich) Prize for Watercolor in 1966, underscoring his national recognition as a watercolorist.
