Slave carved cane, reputedly owned by the famous slave insurrectionist, and skilled carpenter Denmark Vesey who has hanged in Charleston, S.C. in 1821, featuring silver-inlaid letters is "I BE BORN JAN 29 1800"; after winning a lottery in December, 1799, Vesey purchased his freedom in January, 1800, and was one of the first Black leaders to fight for the abolishment of slavery
