Condition: Fair-antique; wood stock has significant wear commensurate w/ age & use; chipping around the barrel tang; some splitting around the lockplate, on the belly, and butt of the stock; barrel & lockplate have dark brown patina w/ heavy rust & pitting; bore is dark & heavily pitted; missing rear sight; mechanically functional
Includes: brass forend cap & buttplate; steel ramrod; sling swivels (front one is broken); copy of US M1855/61 w/ removed Maynard mechanism for simplified manufacturing
Marked: lockplate dated "1862" behind the hammer and double stamped "C.S. / RICHMOND, VA" in the front; left side of stock has what appears to be initials "H I W" hand carved
Note from owner: Confederate Richmond, Virginia musket, dated 1862. A very well-made Confederate copy of the U. S. Springfield of the Civil War period. Manufactured in Richmond during the war years, thousands of these .58 “mini” rifles were carried by Confederate soldiers; today they are very rare.

Provenance: Property from the personal estate collection of iconic Texas businessman, civic leader and philanthropist Billy Joe Red McCombs (1927-2023) from his home in Olmos Park, Texas; previously on long-term loan to either San Antonio Academy or the Bexar County Courthouse; this lot is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity as property from the McCombs personal estate
