Note from owner:  Crossbow, probably German, 17th century, inlaid. A German crossbow, probably early 17th century with bone/ivory inlays. Crossbows were extremely powerful weapons that were designed to shoot a short dart-like arrow called a "quarle." They were powerful enough to penetrate armor and kill even the largest game. These weapons were in general use from the 14th century through the 17th century.
