Marked: bottom of stock reads "CONN / 99", then "43" underneath receiver indicates Connecticut purchase; receiver marked "PEABODY'S PAT. / JULY 22, 1862 / MAN'F'D BY /  PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. / , PROV. R.I."; barrel reads "63 / B4 / EE * PW"; "63" stamp on top of stock wrist; "46" on buttplate tang
Note from owner: An interesting rifle breech loading offered to the government in 1862 by the inventor Peabody but rejected by the US Army. Peabody sold his patent and his rifles in Europe. One of the strongest of the breech loading actions.

Provenance: Property from the personal estate collection of iconic Texas businessman, civic leader and philanthropist Billy Joe Red McCombs (1927-2023) from his home in Olmos Park, Texas; previously on long-term loan to either San Antonio Academy or the Bexar County Courthouse; this lot is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity as property from the McCombs personal estate
