Scrimshaw-inscribed powderhorn with brass nozzle, dating 1739-1741, depicting the Caribbean incursion of the British Admiral Vernon (for whom George Washington named his Virginia estate) during the "War of Jenkins Ear", the scene shows an attack on a Spanish fortification by an English "bomb ketch"naval vessel, and uniquely, the royal arms of England have been replaced by the Spanish arms of Castile and Leon

Provenance: Property from the personal estate collection of iconic Texas businessman, civic leader and philanthropist Billy Joe Red McCombs (1927-2023) from his home in Olmos Park, Texas; previously on long-term loan to either San Antonio Academy or the Bexar County Courthouse; this lot is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity as property from the McCombs personal estate
