Original French-Indian War New England powder horn, scrimshaw inscribed, "ABRAHAM HIGGINS, HIS 1757, TO USE IN ARMIES IN CAPT. JAMES SMEDLYS COMPY OF FAIRFEILD, PRICE TWO SHILLINGS WORK"; both Higgins and Smedly were residents of Fairfield (Connecticut) at the time and participated in the 1757-1758 Hudson Valley campaigns against Ft. Ticonderoga, Ft. George, Crown Point, etc. to oust the French from the region; among their allies were the Iroquois Indians; the battle resulted in some of the most violent fighting in Colonial American history, and ended with the defeat of the French.

Provenance: Property from the personal estate collection of iconic Texas businessman, civic leader and philanthropist Billy Joe Red McCombs (1927-2023) from his home in Olmos Park, Texas; previously on long-term loan to either San Antonio Academy or the Bexar County Courthouse; this lot is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity as property from the McCombs personal estate
