Randy Peyton (Texas / Italy, b. 1958), mountain landscape with cabin, oil on canvas, signed lower right

sight: 24 x 36 in., frame: 37.5 x 49 in.

Provenance: Property from a home in San Antonio, Texas

Randy Peyton is a self-taught landscape painter who began painting Texas scenery as a teenager and devoted himself to art full time in 1980 after studying computer science in California. Rather than studying under formal teachers, he meticulously analyzed the work of regional masters including Robert Wood, Porfirio Salinas, Don Warren, and William Slaughter, adopting their approaches to traditional landscape painting while developing his own distinctive style. A traditionalist with a scholarly approach to technique and composition, Peyton combines soft realism with touches of Impressionism, using palettes ranging from earthy to jewel tones and emphasizing the interplay of light and shadow; his subjects include Texas bluebonnets, Hill Country oaks, seasonal landscapes, and, later, the mountains, streams, and waterways of southern Europe. His work ranges from miniature paintings to murals, and his first solo exhibition of Texas landscapes sold out in just 40 minutes, establishing him as a highly regarded painter of the Texas landscape.
