Porfirio Salinas was known for his magnificent landscape paintings of Central Texas with an emphasis on the vast bluebonnet fields that grow there in the springtime. Salinas painted in the late American Impressionist style, with well composed drawing, and a warm palette. He studied with the director of the San Antonio Art School, Jose Arpa, and Robert Wood. Salinas was one of the first Mexican-American artists to have his work widely recognized, earning attention of prominent collectors such as President Lyndon B. Johnson.
