Nocona Parker Burgess (Oklahoma / New Mexico, b. 1969), "Owl Mother", oil on canvas with applied owl brooch, signed vertically at lower left

sight: 30 x 24 in., frame: 35.5 x 29.5 in.

Provenance: Property from a Wimberley, Texas art and antiques collector

A descendant of Chief Quanah Parker and a member of the Comanche Nation, Nocona Parker Burgess grew up immersed in a rich cultural and artistic lineage, surrounded by painters, beadworkers, and quilt makers. After briefly attending the University of Oklahoma, he moved to Santa Fe and enrolled at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), where he earned an Associate of Fine Arts degree in 1991 and developed a passion for blending traditional Native themes with contemporary styles. He later continued his studies at the University of New Mexico and the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, completing his B.F.A. in 1999. Known for his emotionally resonant portraiture and modern interpretations of historical Native subjects, Burgess' work reflects both deep respect for his ancestral heritage and a distinctly modern Indigenous identity. Since returning to art full-time, he has exhibited nationally and internationally, including shows in Europe, and continues to explore creative expression through painting, music, and poetry.
