Nancy M. Bush (Texas, b. 1947), "Hill Country Pasture", oil on canvas laid to wood panel, signed lower right

sight: 9 x 12 in., frame: 16.5 x 19.5 in.

Provenance: Property from a home in San Antonio, Texas

Nancy Bush is known for her tonalist landscape paintings that emphasize mood, atmosphere, and emotional resonance. Her artistic training began informally with her great uncle, portrait artist Ralph Rowntree, and later shifted to intensive classical study after a career in business. She trained at Mission Renaissance in Austin, Texas, completing a yearlong course in classical techniques in just four months, and also studied at the Laguna Gloria Art Museum School of Art. Early influences included colorist painters like Ray Vinella and Ann Templeton, but her style evolved toward a subdued tonalist palette inspired by 19th- and 20th-century masters such as George Inness, Isaac Levitan, and John Twachtman. Bush has also studied extensively with contemporary artists Michael Workman and Scott Christensen, and her work reflects a classical yet expressive approach to capturing light, mood, and the emotional essence of the landscape.
