Malcolm Furlow began his formal artistic education as an art major at the University of Texas on a track scholarship, but left college after an art professor disapproved of his painting style; he later developed his craft through his work as a model-maker at Walt Disney Studios and through extensive study and practice in watercolor, acrylic, and oil painting. Influenced from childhood by the landscapes and Native American cultures he encountered while traveling through New Mexico with his father, Furlow became known for vividly colored acrylic paintings of Native Americans, using color as an emotional element and portraying both Native culture and its relationship to the Anglo world. After returning to painting in 1987, he achieved international recognition, selling out more than fifty solo exhibitions by 2007 and receiving a Silver Award from the Sorbonne and a Gold Award from the Luxembourg Museum in Paris, the latter an honor he shared with Pablo Picasso. His work has been exhibited and collected internationally, including by the Smithsonian, the Eiteljorg Museum, the National Wildlife Museum, the Santa Fe Fine Arts Museum, and the White House, and he was also featured in a PBS documentary, The Life and Art of Malcolm Furlow.
