sight: 20 x 30 in., frame: 29.5 x 39.5 in.

Provenance: Property from the New Braunfels, Texas home of award-winning set decorator and artist Mary McIntosh

Kathryn Stats is primarily self-taught, developing her artistic practice in the mid-1970s while living in Brazil, where she painted as she explored the country’s neighborhoods and landscapes, but she was also influenced by her great-uncle, noted Utah landscape painter LeConte Stewart, whom she remembered painting outdoors and teaching plein-air classes. Known for her landscapes of Utah, Alaska, the Oregon coast, Tuscany, and Spain, Stats is particularly recognized for her expressive use of color and her ability to capture the interplay of light and shadow. Although she initially avoided painting Utah because its scenery seemed too familiar, she eventually embraced its less-traveled landscapes as important subjects. Her work has earned significant regional recognition, and she was named one of the 100 most important living artists in Utah by a committee of historians, artists, and collectors.
