Joseph Hautman was the winner of the Federal Duck Stamp contest in 1991. He studied physics and astronomy at the University of Minnesota, and eventually earned a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the University of Michigan. It was during that time that he entered the Federal Duck Stamp contest as an artistic outlet.
