Jose Vives-Atsara was Spanish-born artist, who immigrated to the United States after living through the Spanish Civil War, settling in San Antonio, Texas, with his wife and child in 1947. Vives-Atsara's drew inspiration from his community and environment, drawing inspiration from the San Antonio missions and the San Antonio River, working in a style that met at the apex of realism and impressionism, with his career including receiving commissions to create artworks for Pop John Paul II and heads of state, and becoming a professor and artist-in-residence at San Antonio's Incarnate Word College.
