John Moyers, "South of the Border", oil on masonite, signed lower left, signed again and titled on the verso, dated 1997

sight: 12 x 16 in., frame: 19 x 23 in.

Provenance: Property from a Rockport, Texas home

John Moyers received formal training at the Laguna Beach School of Art and the California Institute for the Arts on a Walt Disney Studio scholarship, but a pivotal influence was his 1979 workshop with Cowboy Artists of America painter Robert Lougheed at the Okanagan Game Farm in British Columbia, where he learned to paint wildlife from life through intensive plein-air study. The son of Western painter William Moyers, he developed a style rooted in firsthand observation, painting American Indians, cowboys, Old and New Mexico subjects, wildlife, and landscapes. His annual painting trips to Canada continue to provide inspiration, particularly for his northern landscapes. A member of the Cowboy Artists of America since 1994 and former president of the organization, Moyers has exhibited at the Prix de West at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, the Masters of the American West at the Autry Museum of the American West, and the annual CAA exhibition at the Phoenix Art Museum, where he received top awards for more than seven consecutive years in both oil and water-soluble media.
