Joe G. Russell (Texas, 1926-2008), Texas Hill Country autumn landscape, oil on canvas, signed lower left, with G. Harvey Gallery (Austin, Texas) framing label on the verso
sight: 24 x 36 in., frame: 33 x 46 in.
Provenance: Property from a home in San Marcos, Texas
Joe G. Russell was originally from Austin, Texas, but moved his family to Kerrville in 1966, where he began painting in oils full time. His quiet studio was at the end of a typical ranch road south of town. Russell studied at the Banff School of Fine Art in Cloudcroft, New Mexico, and also concentrated on portraiture for several years at the Marion Koogler McNay Museum in San Antonio, Texas. He would have told you that experience was his best teacher creating a style and technique all his own.
