Jim once again delivers one of his charming narratives, influenced by the great Thomas Hart Benton. Warm, rhythmic, and nostalgic.

Born in 1964 in Roswell, New Mexico, Jim Vogel was the eleventh of twelve children. His upbringing in this small Southwestern town played a pivotal role in shaping his artistic sensibilities. Encouraged by his parents to explore drawing and painting, Vogel’s natural talent flourished outside the confines of formal training. Visits to the Roswell Museum of Art exposed him to regional masters such as Peter Hurd, Luis Jiménez, and Georgia O’Keeffe.

For Vogel, painting is more than a visual endeavor; it is a narrative experience. His canvases tell vibrant stories of the Southwest, informed by personal memories and community folklore. He captures the essence of the land and its people, believing that when conveyed authentically, these regional stories resonate universally.

Vogel’s artistry is further enriched through collaboration with his wife, Christen, also an artist. Together, they frame his paintings using creatively salvaged materials. Their home and studio are located in the Embudo Valley of Northern New Mexico.

Vogel was the recipient of the 2024 Night of Artist Museum Purchase Award and recently held a twenty-six-year retrospective at the Taos Art Museum’s Fechin Studio. He is represented by Manitou Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
