Jan Theunisz Blanckerhoff (The Netherlands, 1628-1669), seventeenth-century nautical painting of ships at sea, oil on canvas sight: 20 x 30 in., frame: 26 x 38 in. Provenance: Property from the collection of a San Antonio, Texas gentleman Jan Theunisz Blanckerhoff (1628–1669) was a Dutch painter best known for his maritime scenes during the Dutch Golden Age. Blanckerhoff initially trained as a landscape painter, but he soon developed a fascination with naval battles, seascapes, and ships, subjects that defined much of his career. Though his career was cut short by his untimely death at age 41, his works were influential among later marine painters, providing a window into the maritime strength and cultural pride of the Dutch Republic in the 17th century.
