Steven Oiestad developed his artistic skills from childhood, studying and sketching the animals around his family’s ranch near Big Timber, Montana, and later earned a degree in Agricultural Education from Montana State University. His artistic development was further strengthened by his involvement with the Great Falls art community. Working primarily in pastel, Oiestad focuses on contemporary American cowboys and landscapes, drawing on his firsthand knowledge of ranch life and the Western environment. A 37-year veteran of the C.M. Russell Auction and a frequent participant in its quick-draw events, he received the prestigious Honorary Chairman’s Award there in 2004 and was selected as an artist in residence at Glacier National Park in 2003. His work has been exhibited at the C.M. Russell Museum, Montana Governor’s Mansion, Dana Gallery, and Hodges Fine Art, and he has been selected five times for the National Pastel Top 100; he is also a signature member of the Montana Painters Alliance.
