Provenance: Property from the collection of the late Marshall E. Kuykendall, of the former 101 Ranch in Hays County.
The 101 Ranch name and brand were gifted to Wylie Kuykendall by his good friend George Washington Miller of the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch near Ponca City, Oklahoma, whom he'd met in the Civil War.

Started in 1893, the 101 Ranch near Ponca City, OK was a massive influence on western and cowboy culture in the U.S. At its height, the ranch spanned more than 110,000 acres. The ranch was founded by George Washington Miller, but his sons are responsible for its fame. George, Joe, and Zack started the Wild West Show in 1905, known for the wild events and shows. They exhibited the ranch hands and American Indians skills, even featuring the famed Apache Geronimo. The ranch also took part in producing early Westerns on the silver screen with the Bison 101 Film Company. Many stars had connections with the 101 including Will Rodgers, Tom Mix, Buck Jones, and Bill Pickett. The Miller Brothers had touring shows all over the U.S. and even in Canada, Mexico, and Europe.
The Great Depression brought on hardships for the Wild West Show, and it began to struggle greatly. In 1927, Joe Miller died of carbon monoxide poisoning and 2 years later, George tragically died in an automobile accident. By 1932, most of the ranch land had been sold off, and the Wild West Show was history. Today, all that remains is a few of the ranch structures and some historical land markers.
This early 20th century shotgun was likely used in the Wild West Shows. Take your chance to own a piece of western history.
