Charles Partridge Adams (Amer., 1858-1942), Western mountain landscape, watercolor and mixed media on paper, signed lower left

sight: 7 x 8 in., frame: 12 x 12.5 in.

Provenance: The Estate of Charles “Lucky” Attal (1942-2025), longtime noted Austin antiques and art dealer

Charles Adams was a largely self-taught landscape painter who developed his artistic practice through extensive observation, travel, experimentation, and contact with leading artists of his era. After moving to Denver, he received early encouragement from Helen Henderson Chain, a pupil of George Inness, and later visited the studios of Inness and Worthington Whittredge on the East Coast and William Keith and Thomas Hill in California. He worked in both oils and watercolor, adopting techniques and styles according to the needs of his subjects, with his work particularly noted for its landscapes of the Colorado Rockies and other Western regions. His first public exhibition took place in Denver in 1886, and he subsequently exhibited in local and national shows through 1904. His summer studio, “The Sketchbox,” in Estes Park became an important venue for his work after its construction in 1905, attracting visitors from across the country and abroad who purchased his paintings. Adams traveled extensively throughout the American West, painting Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming, Montana, and California, and his later California work focused primarily on coastal landscapes.
