Alexandre Hogue (Oklahoma / Texas, 1898-1994), sunset scene possibly in the Texas Hill Country, pastel on paper or illustration panel, signed and dated lower right, 1924

sight: 10 x 14 in., frame: 19 x 23 in.

Provenance: Property from a home in San Antonio, Texas

A painter, printmaker, and muralist known for his Dust Bowl series and early 20th-century depictions of Indian life in Taos, New Mexico, Alexander Hogue worked in a style that was simultaneously abstract and realistic. His formal art education began at the College of Art and Design in Minneapolis, followed by trips to Texas to study under the master of plains landscape painting, Frank Reaugh. Later travels to New York City and Taos, New Mexico further informed his subject matter and style. But he returned to Texas throughout his lifetime to paint in the summers, famously focusing on the early oil fields. Today, collectors prize both Hogue originals as well as his many lithographs and works on paper.
