Antabellum era primary historical Texas document describing a slave mortage arranged for James and Maria Middleton to James R. Sweet, offering a slave as collateral for a $250 debt to Sweet, dated 1852, with two folded ribbon seals and notarized additions, unframed, in protective plastic slip
James R. Sweet was a Confederate officer, and San Antonio, Texas mayor (1859-1862), in addition to owning the Sweet and Co. merchantile. Sweet purchased a significant tract of land at the headwaters of the San Antonio River, the site of present-day Alamo Heights, and built a home that would later be purchased by George W. Brackenridge, and eventually become part of the Universty of the Incarnate Word Campus
